Simple fact:
In 2004 the anti gay marriage voters went 11 for 11 in state measures banning same sex marriage. The voting was 2-1 for bans.
Even in Oregon, the best chance for gay rights in the election, the ban received 57% of the vote.
20 million people voted on measures and in Mississippi 89% voted in favor of a ban.
I hate this reality, but it is the way it is, and people, you have to let this one go not just for Obama but for all democrats running.
So before people attack me personally. I support GLBT groups and individuals both personally and professionally. Our society and the world treats those that engage in same sex relationships horribly. We all know this and have to work to end it.
However, for politicians GLBT activism will cost them elections.
Only 60 votes for the hate crime bill in the Senate. This after how many years?
38 States banning same sex marriage.
Massachusetts was only the 6th jurisdiction in the WORLD to support same sex marriage.
California law
- (a) Marriage is a personal relation arising out of a civil
contract between a man and a woman, to which the consent of the
parties capable of making that contract is necessary. Consent alone
does not constitute marriage. Consent must be followed by the
issuance of a license and solemnization as authorized by this
division, except as provided by Section 425 and Part 4 (commencing
with Section 500).
If progressives want to keep working on equality for GLBT issues we have to do it on the grassroots and state level. If we use this is a litmus test for Presidential candidates democrats will not win the whitehouse any time soon. This includes losing in a year that could create a lasting Democratic majority. This is also not just about the presidency, but also the House and Senate. The GOP is going to make this an issue and it is one they can win on. They have won on it.
Before anyone goes off on me personally for this commentary on the state of affairs, please limit personal attacks and if you have any evidence to support your view that advocating GLBT rights helps on a national level I would love to hear them. But you don't.
Iraq, Iran, Health Care, Social Security, Poverty, Education, Economy, ....
Lets focus on issues where people and policy can make a difference. Politicians are not going to change any minds on this during an election season. Remember Clinton's first 100 days and gays in the military debacle ending in the absurd DADT policy. I don't think politicians ever change minds on anything.
There comes a time when political factions have to take one for the team. I know GLBT factions are always holding their noses when they vote, but timing is everything. Get a solid majority and then push the issue but if you push it now, you will lose a great chance at the majority.
Will all due respect and compassion.
